Unfortunately we could not taste the “Best Port”, but the port on offering was not bad.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the 96 Winery Road Restaurant, but I did not know that they are right next door to a wine estate that’s about to make history!

Now there’s a tasting not to be missed! No fear to experiment here at Zandberg it seems! They were the first ...

Lovane is a boutique wine estate situated right next to Neethlingshof. They got their name from the the word U’Lovane, which is the Xhosa name for a Chameleon. There was apparently a lot of Chameleons on the farm back in the days.
All their wine are named after a Xhosa word. They have a Petit Verdot “Umama”, which means “mother” and a Cabernet Sauvignon “Utata”, which means “father”. While tasting the wine, one can browse through the notes of the Wine maker and truly appreciate the effort and the love that goes into each barrel.

Hazendal is one of those old and classic wine farms in the Bottelary Hills. It’s a perfect venue for weddings and I absolutely loved the big old fireplace. Hazendal has a unique blend of Russian inspiration and Cape Dutch style. A tour through the Marvol Museum featuring a fascinating insight into Russian culture with authentic icons and artwork. The restaurant is worth a visit!

On our arrival at Kaapzicht we first thought that it was closed, but then we realized that we must just ring the bell!
Kaapzicht is a beautiful family farm in the heart of the Bottelary hills. One can see that the family has a great passion for the business, it show in the quality of their wines. The wine is reasonably priced and our host Melina was friendly and informative. I really enjoyed the Steytler Vision 2006. Just a pity that it’s R10 over my budget!

What a beautiful Wine estate. The long drive up, is totally worth it! Big trees and a beautiful garden welcomes you as you walk down the path towards the tasting room and outdoor Restaurant.
We were first welcomed by Robert and then the very friendly manageress Sonette did the tasting with us. She explained the processes that the winemaker of Hartenberg uses to produce their high quality wine. They do not make use of a lab to tell them when the grapes are ready to harvest. The winemaker takes a walk ...

While visiting some farms on the Bottelary wine route with a good friend, we were in desperate need of some food to even out the alcohol levels.
We decided to visit Beyerskloof and we caught the kitchen just before closing. The menu looked amazing and the prices were very reasonable. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch, accompanied by some bubbly. We took a quick walk through the modern and extremely “good-looking” tasting room. The staff was friendly and I’m totally going back to taste their famous Pinotage.

The Mother-ship of all commercial Wine Estates. Spiers’ motto must definitely be: GO BIG OR GO HOME! Once you have found a parking space you can enter the wonderland of experiences that they have on offer. It’s obviously not my first visit to Spier and I don’t think that it will be my last. Apart from the fact that it’s extremely busy, it’s always a pleasure to walk around the farm, shops and historical buildings.
Skilpadvlei is a nice place to bring the family for a Sunday lunch in the valley. The tasting room is a bit boring and needs some TLC. Our host, JP de Toit, was very friendly and good looking and made up for the bad interior. I’m thinking of creating a “Wine Hottie” page on the site. He’ll be the perfect poster-boy for February. The wine was easy drinking and affordable.

Asara is another Wine Estate on the Stellenbosch Hills wine route that got a face lift since my last visit. They are way bigger with a new restaurant, a delicatessen shop and a huge tasting room. They went for the Tuscan Villa look, which does not really suite the Stellenbosch area. It feels as if you are visiting an upmarket Ratanga Junction, it’s just missing the rides.
The staff in the tasting room was friendly but uninformed. They did not know much about the wine or the history of the ...

The wine, the view, the host! The tasting room is modern and has a lofty feel to it. It has amazing views over the Stellenbosch vineyards and Cape Peninsula.
Our host Cindy Swiegelaar was great. One can see that she has a great passion for the wine industry and she made our experience unforgettable. Amani’s motto is that the customer comes first and they will do ...

Avontuur is a lovely Wine Estate with modern finishes. All their wines are named after horses on the farm. Our host Louise van der Bijl was very friendly and informative and one can see that she knows her wine very well. The farm also produces some quality brandy that is for tasting and although I am not a fan of brandy, this one stole my heart. It’s a 10 year old Brandy from 1994 at R340 per bottle. We also found the best White Wine to date. Avontuur is an ...

It almost felt as if we entered a Fairy Tail. If you take in consideration that Annandale keeps their wine in French oaks barrels for 5 years….Hallo Neverland! Oh, but it’s actually Rugby Land.
The owner of Annandale, Hempies du Toit, is an ex Springbok. Hempies believes in the traditions of “Old World” wine making. This means that the grapes are hand-selected during harvesting and that the entire maceration and ...

Our host was friendly, but he did not really get a change to speak. We spotted some Durbanites at the other end of the counter and we started chatting to them. Verbal diaharee followed and it was fun to compare Cape Town with Durban.
The wine was good and we enjoyed the experience. Don’t forget to by a bottle of port when you visit them. It’s the only place where they sell their port.

My first stop was the curio shop. They had everything that a tourist would love in there. The prices of the curios were high, but not overly expensive and they at least tried to cater for every wallet.
I left the curios shop and ...
