Had a super dinner there last night, and was really impressed with the qaulity of the food – superb!!! The 2009 Oude Wellington Chardonnay is drinking really nicely.

We had to attend a wedding on the neighbouring farm (Five Mountains Lodge) at 11am on a Saturday morning and actually arrived an hour early. So we decided to pop in at Oude Wellington for a tasting. We were welcomed by a very friendly lady called Margret and she gave us some interesting info on the farm and it’s history. The house where they conduct the tastings dates back to the late 1700 and it’s got that old authentic and homely feel to it..

We kicked of our tasting with the Vasecco. It’s a slightly sparkling dry rose wine and it was fresh, crisp and affordable at only R27 a bottle. Great for summer. The second wine was a 2005 Chardonnay. It was actually not bad at all, considering the vintage and it’s on sale now for only R11 a bottle if you take a box of 12. They are making space in the cellar, so one can get some great deals at the moment. I also enjoyed the 2008 Chardonnay, that almost tasted more like a Sauvignon Blanc. The cool thing is that the Chardonnay grape are not treated with any chemicals or pesticides, which makes it organic (without the certificate.)

I enjoyed the interesting comparison that Margret made with the Currant Abbey. She compared exactly the same wine, the one slightly chilled and the other bottle at room temperature. One can not believe the difference in taste. I preferred the chilled version and think it will go down well in summer. Another cool fact about the wines name is that it’s an anagram for Ruby Cabernet, which it is.

The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon was yum, as well as the 2005 Shiraz at only R52 a bottle. Tasted like a R100 wine. They also have some super late vintages that dates back 11 years (1998 Cabernet Sauvignon) at R275 a bottle and it’s apparently worth every cent.

The 5 year old brandy was out of this world at R180 a bottle and the Grappa even more impressive. Apparently a nice “pick me up” when combined with espresso or just some good old Nescafe coffee.

Special additional features that made our visit to Oude Wellington an unique and memorable experience was the Wellington Boots that represents their brand, the Alpaka animals that looks like a Lama and the owner hot Z1 BMW.

Very affordable and drinkable wines and a great host with interesting stories. A must visit!
