Friendly, cheerful service on busy Ommiberg day, everyone having lots of fun. Tank samples of chenin and rose on offer. Wines are reasonably priced. We’ll go back for the pinotage.

Dear Madame de Wyn

Thank you for your kind words – I am very pleased that you had a great time here at Windmeul! That’s what it’s all about: great wines at great prices, and great service!

Hope to see you here at Ommiberg 2010 on 13 March? Then you will get the chance to taste the young wines straight from the tanks!

The wines at Windmeul are very affordable, especially if you take inconsideration all the awards they have won. We taste a really nice barrel fermented Chenin Blanc priced at only R35. I enjoyed the Shiraz 2007, but a bit more wood would have made it even better. My favourite was the 2007 Pinotage Reserve @ R75. I also invested in a 5L Mill White for those hot days next to the pool.

The service was top notch and we had a very nice time at Windmeul. They are definitely showing some of the other cooperate cellars how it should be done!

@Drew Master – Dear Drew

Thank you for the nice compliments about our wines and service.

I have to point out, however, that our tasting room is anything but small and cosy, and that we’ve never charged for tastings. Perhaps you just got your notes mixed up? If not, please contact me urgently at suretha@windmeul.com

Very well priced wines here almost like a co-op or maybe it is one. The wines are true value for money and so is the service our host was friendly and informative R20 tasting fee.
The tasting centre is nothing spectacular smal neat cozy with nothing more to offer other than the wine’s
The Pinotage is just fantastic and so is the price LOVE it

@Hantus Mostert – Dear Hantus, thank you for the kind (and very well-informed!) words. We look forward to seeing you at Windmeul again when our Pinotage 2007 Reserve is released. Cheers! Suretha (PRO – Windmeul Kelder)

Windmeul Pinotage – Tops!!!!!!

At the 2008 Winemaker’s Choice Wine Competition, it was chosen as the Best Red Wine overall, and it goes without saying that it also garnered Best Pinotage, as well as receiving a Double Gold International Michelangelo Award and a Double Gold Veritas Award. In addition, the same wine was a finalist in the annual Absa Top 10 Pinotage Competition.

It is very seldom that the same wine is so highly awarded by so many different panels, and it can justifiably be called the a “red king of 2008″.

In addition to the awards already mentioned, Windmeul’s Pinotage entry in the 2008 National Young Wine Show was also chosen as the National Champion Pinotage.

Windmeul Kelder’s wine-producers surely supplies top-quality grapes from prime wine-growing areas

It is not only Pinotage that flourishes here. In 2008 Windmeul Kelder reigned supreme with a number of other top awards for several wine-styles and cultivars, including a Double Gold Michelangelo for the Windmeul Chenin Blanc 2008 and the 2005 Windmeul Port; a Gold Michelangelo for the Windmeul Shiraz Reserve 2006 and 2007; WINE magazine’s Best Value choice for Windmeul Sauvignon Blanc 2008; Chenin Blanc 2008, Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2006 and Port 2005; Class Winner in the 2008 National Young Wine Show for Windmeul Cabernet Sauvignon (unwooded) and Gold for Windmeul Merlot.

The wine history of Windmeul Kelder and the surrounding wine-farming area stretches far back in time, with the first grapes being planted by the French Huguenots some 300 years ago. The name Windmeul Kelder comes from the windmill which was erected in Agter-Paarl in 1884. Windmeul Kelder was founded on September 4th, 1944, with 23 initial members.

Today it is a popular destination, offering top-quality wines, as well as facilities for conferences, seminars, weddings and other functions in a distinctive environment.

I don’t agree with Cobus (apart from the comment on their chenin – always a winner). Winning double gold in both Michelangelo and Veritas is certainly not something one would expect from a “below average” cellar. Maybe you should revisit them, Cobus?

Also a real co-op winery, only the chenin blanc is something to drink. below average
