2010-08-30T01:37:34Z |

getting to the gate and had to pay R10 entrance fee …. I thought it was a bit cheecky! But it was worth it and I had the best Semillon ever! Did not like there style of Shiraz.
A perfect way to spend a lazy day… walking through the gardens and lining up a flight to sip.
The Vergelegen White is sublime
Excellent wines although a bit pricey. The gardens are lovely and definately worth a visit!
I love their Cab and flagship white blend. The tasting is a bit impersonal, but the wines are great. Take a walk through the garden, and visit the historical farm house
A worthy destination with incredible history. The gardens are simply breathtaking and measure up to the wines.
Worth spending the time and money. Obviously a national treasure. The wines need no introductions or fanfare from someone like me. They speak for themselves.
Fork out the money for The Red, The White, V or Nirvana… worth every penny… buy the other stuff too. Some of the best we produce.
An iconic wine farm not to be missed. Just love the camphor trees which are national monuments.
yet went to the vineyards again! the place is surrounded by so much history and splendor!! this time did the whole cellar tour as well and wow they have a very modern cellar all gravity fed with the cellar into and on the side of the hill with beautiful views in all directions!
great place, carla in the tasting room was very helpful, bit pricey, but definately worth a visit.
Great location with excellent gardens. Excellent wines although a bit pricey. Good infomative host
For paying R10 entrances fee, it is worth it here, whether you are looking for a nice stroll on a sunny day or looking to taste wine, one can get it all here, the gardens add to the serenity of the vineyard, the views all around the vineyard are spectacular as well! and yes Madame de Wyn, the trees are HUGE!!
R10 entrance fee? I was caught by surprise. It’s the first wine estate where I had to pay to go in. I paid the R10 and the security guard assured me that it’s well worth the money. He also provided me with a detailed map of the estate.
My first stop was the curio shop. They had everything that a tourist would love in there. The prices of the curios were high, but not overly expensive and they at least tried to cater for every wallet.
I left the curios shop and followed the path leading to the tasting centre. I did not do a tasting…it’s just to weird to do a tasting on my own. I did have a look at the wine list though and will definitely go back for a tasting.
I walked along another path that led me to the Manor House. I felt a bit like “Alice in Wonderland”. The gardens were absolutely breathtaking and magical. Reverend Francois Vanltijn was correct in saying: ” I saw this place with exceptional pleasure, since everything there was laid out wonderfully finely” in 1700.
I came across the biggest trees that I have ever seen in my life! (And no, I did not eat something in the herb garden.) They were humongous! Absolutely spectacular.
I eventually took a break on a bench in the garden in front of the Library. It was peaceful and tranquil and I did not want to leave. The experience was worth every sent in that R10. I’m so going back to try the wines, enjoy a picnic and discover my own inner “Alice” in this wonderland!
Whilst quite pricey at R150 per head the picnic lunch was absolutely superb. The setting is beautiful and unique. The picnic area has an old colonial feel to it that is very appealing. The tables are widely scattererd amongst the huge old camphor trees so noone can eavesdrop on the crap we tend to talk at this type of occasion. The sense of privacy is unique and very conducive to future visits. The uniformed waiters set the tone for elegance and quality. They were all good and the service was superb even down to the provision of a good quality, clean and hygienic rug/canvas for the baby to crawl on. Very nice touch! The food was good and ample and a wide choice of tea/coffees were on offer. The winery tour was reasonable tho the interior all feels a bit sterile and stainless steely being a recently built cellar. All very orderly and well disciplined! Its our second tour of this unique winery. It was built high up on the top of a hill so the grapes get trucked to the top and the juice is piped from floor to floor until it emerges at the bottom as wine. Our tour guide was pretty and competent but she was a student doing a holiday job, this being late January, so was unable to answer questions in depth. Other criticisms? The entry fee to get into the estate! I suppose it works to keep the riff raff out. The poor signposting caused our guest on crutches to walk an awful long way to get to the picnic lunch, only to find that we could have driven there and parked the car nearby. The wine seemed a bit pricey for the quality. We go for reds in the R40 to R60 range so I can’t speak for their white wines. We will definitely be back for the picnic in the future.
