Very rustic and down to eart tasting room. Was served by the owner himself both times we visited the farm. Wines realy well made and excelent vallue for money. Also got very good olive oil. Pity about the very steep stairs and no hand rail for older people.
Kind of a retro tasting in the sense of wine route circa 1980 – casual, relaxed, salt-of-the-earth farm owner does the pouring. No mess, no fuss, no frills, just downright good value. When last did you go to a winery where all the wines are under R50 a bottle – and worth drinking? More power to you Marais!
Got there on a cold day in winter fortunately there was a huge Fire on the fire place. We were greeted by Marais the owner who went on to give us a fantastic tasting of his exceptional value for money wines accross the board very well priced range R25 to R60.
Awesome to be at a farm in franshoek that does not think they are French.
It was refreshing to find a wine estate in the Franschhoek valley which name is actually pronounceable and proudly South African. Drakensig got it’s name from the majestic view over the Drakenstein Mountains. The scenery was absolutely magical and I liked the Country Provance look that they’ve got going.
On our arrival we were welcomed by a friendly and Rastafarian looking donkey who we have named Rasta Irie. He is the coolest thing on 4 legs!
Our host was the owner himself, Marais Viljoen. He was friendly, funny and down to earth. Marias told us that they consider themselves a boutique winery that produce uniquely individual, hand-crafted wines. Normally the wine farms that consider themselves a boutique winery are quite pricey, but not Drakensig. The prices were extremely affordable and the wines tasted fantastic. They are the first and only wine farm in South Africa that has made Malbec/Shiraz and you can invest in a bottle for the bargain price of R70. The other wines were priced between R30 and R40 a bottle.
On our way out Rasta Irie greeted us with a EEEEEH O! and a wee-snaw! just to remind us of the special jem that we found.
8/10 from me!
