Tell us about your experience at Domaine Brahms
@Hennie Coetzee – thanks for that piece of Hot Gossip. That was the story I got from Mr. Titus. I guess he must get the double gold for telling tall stories as well!
@Madame de Wyn – Uhm – sorry to correct you – Brahms actually refers to Gesie’s ex husband, Brahm Lategan. When they got divorced, there was a HUGE, quite public spat over the farm. Gesie eventually won the fight, but kept the name the same.
Her best wines are the Pinotage and Shiraz and I have to agree about the barrel fermented Chenin – absolutely beautiful. Try it with sushi.
What a great find! We got to Domaine Brahms just after 2pm on the 24th of December and there was no one in the tasting room. From a far I saw a man waving at us, indicating that his on his way. He introduced himself as Victor Titus and informed us that they were actually closed, but insisted that we stay for a tasting. Dedication and passion shines through brightly and it was an inspiring moment for our whole tasting party.
We started of with the 2009 Unwooded Chenin Blanc and Victor informed us that the farm is owned by Geesie and Johan van Devender. Geesie is a ex Lawyer and are now the winemaker at Domaine Brahms. Domaine means “place” in French and “Brahms” is a legendary composer. We moved onto the barrel fermented Chenin which was absolutely delicious at only R40 a bottle. Their Pinotage are apparently a winner and sells out like a Red Square sale on a Friday. The Brahms Quartet 2006 was yummy at R75 and the 2005 Shiraz was such a classic Shiraz, that I had to taste it twice.
We were not rushed by Victor at all during our tasting. He actually sat down with us at the table and shared his passion for people, wine and the industry. A superb host that deserves a double gold medal for hospitality, personality and friendliness!
A highly recommended visit!
If there is one stop you have to make when in the area its this place. They have a wine edutainer called Victor who is a very well travelled man who knows a lot and is very enthusiastic about his brand. The wines live up to the Praise he gives them. and so well priced is the barrel fermented Chenin. The farm itsell is like something from an old book. Lots of flowers around and a very stunning garden absolutely worth the visit just don’t understand why we don’t often see their wines in shelves often
